How To Tell If Your Microwave Is Leaking Radiation

August 19, 2016

Microwaves are a quick and convenient way to cook food and re-heat leftovers.  But they do come with some health risks from the radiation it produces such as cataracts (quit staring at the food cooking inside the microwave).  Considering microwaves are designed to heat the water in your food and that 70% of our bodies are water, you want to make sure you have a little radiation leakage as possible. Generally, the metal mesh on the inside of the door is supposed to keep the rays inside the oven. One simple trick you can do to see if you microwave is keeping the rays in involves your cell phone.  First DO NOT TURN THE MICROWAVE OVEN ON WITH YOUR PHONE INSIDE.  However, place your phone inside and close the door-DO NOT START IT.  Then from another cell phone or a landline, call the phone inside the oven.  If the shield is working properly, it will block the signal from reaching the phone in the microwave and it will not receive the call.  However don't panic if you find out your microwave is leaking.  Experts suggest you stay as far away from your microwave s you can when it is operating and to never stare at the food while it is cooking.
