White Or Brown Rice?

October 30, 2017

It's fairly common knowledge that brown rice is healthier to eat than white rice, even though brown rice has more calories.  On average brown rice has 248 calories per cup compared to white rice's 204 calories.  But brown rice has more fiber, roughly 3.2 grams per cup compared to 0.6 grams in white rice.  Plus there are more nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, zinc, and niacin.  Also white rice has been linked to higher incidences of type 2 diabetes. A Harvard examination of several studies indicated that people who ate white rice servings three to four times daily were 1.5 times more likely to develop the condition, which researchers believe is related to spikes in blood sugar. But for pregnant women, white rice is a good food staple to eat.  Mothers-to-be should consume more folic acid, which can reduce the potential for birth defects.  White rice is packed with it, nearly eight times as much as brown rice.  But overall the next time you have a choice between white and brown rice, opt for brown rice.
