Would you ever think of a doughnut as a health food?  Or whiskey as a health drink?  Well they're not!  People who completely deprive themselves of foods they love are less likely to sustain their healthy eating goals.  So nutritionists have chimed in who say we can still eat our favorite foods and maintain a healthy diet, with a common theme. Drinking whiskey can help fight cancer.  While consuming alcohol has dangerous health risks, Whiskey contains high levels of ellagic acid, an antioxidant that helps destroy cells that can cause illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Furthermore, the School of Public Health at Harvard University found drinking moderate amounts of alcohol can raise levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or good cholesterol. Eating dark chocolate once a day.  We've sung the praises of dark chocolate for years as it is full of a variety of powerful antioxidants, including cancer-fighting ones like flavanols. A 2015 study found people who ate a small chocolate bar a day had an 11% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and a 23% risk of stroke. Donuts can help prevent binge eating. Experts say eating donuts every once in a while can help people maintain a healthy diet by staving off overeating. The common key in all of this apparent good news is to choose when to enjoy these foods.  Too much of a good thing is generally bad.  Moderate alcohol consumption is one drink a day for women and two for men.  Enjoy one square of dark chocolate a day and eat a doughnut once in a while as a treat.
