Tips To Protect Your Home When You Are Away

December 15, 2016

The end of the year means that a lot of us will be out of town visiting relatives and friends, which is why home burglaries enjoy a spike over the months of November and December.  Although we all know to leave a light on so that it looks like someone is home, most home burglaries take place between 10am and 3pm, so here were some more tips to help protect your house from thieves.  Piling up mail and flyers on your door are signs thieves look for to indicate you are away on vacation, so enlist a trusted friend to visit your home to pick up the mail, especially between 10am and 3pm at least every other day. If you are unable to get someone to house sit, ask the post office to hold your mail until your return.  As simple as it sounds, make sure all doors and windows are locked.  Around 30% of burglars enter a home through an unlocked door or window and if you have automated locks, set up alerts to notify you when they’re opened.  Opt for a home surveillance system, either a monitored service by a company or one that can alert you if motion is detected in your home.  Finally, be careful about those social media posts. Broadcasting you are away can be a temptation some thieves can't resist.
