May begins the moving season and as any recent mover knows, boxes are not cheap!  So searching for free boxes can save you a lot of money.  But beyond supermarkets and liquor stores, there are some surprising places for you to seek out boxes.  Craigslist is a great place to start as well as Freecycle dot org, which offers recyclable items for free or a small fee. Apparently the boxes McDonald's French fries are delivered in are strong and also excellent for hauling heavy items that require a smaller-sized box. Because the original contents of the box are frozen, you won't have to worry about the boxes being smelly or greasy.  Starbucks also has a lot of shipping boxes in various sizes that are sturdy.  Check your local school, which also receive many deliveries for used boxes.  Make a call ahead to see if you can get those boxes. There is also the U-haul box exchange message board, which allows you to search by location for free boxes in your area.
