If you spent a lot of money on a standing desk we hope you kept the receipt. A brand new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology surveyed over 7,300 people who worked 15 hours a week or more to assess how much time they would spend sitting, standing, or walking in a typical day. They found those who mainly stood all day were twice as likely to have heart disease as those who mainly sat all day. It’s because when you're standing for a prolonged period of time, the blood tends to pool in your legs, and it's hard for your heart to pump that blood back up to the top of your body.  This alone can increase your risk of heart disease. But don’t freak out, there’s a happy medium. Workers who did a combination of sitting, standing, and walking had about a 40% reduced risk of heart disease compared to those who only stood all day, so it's all about striking a balance.
