Up to 50,000 people die from the flu each year yet only 5% to 20% of the population take advantage of the flu shot.  Most of the hesitation centers around mis-information, so we're gonna take a look at the flu shot. Although the flu shot is not 100% effective, it's pretty close with flu vaccines being "among the safest medical products in use."  As for the most common reason to avoid the flu shot, you won't catch the flu from the vaccine. Contrary to popular belief, the vaccines do not contain the live flu virus. The vaccine is taken from two of the hundreds of different proteins that compose an influenza virus and by stripping non-essential proteins off the virus, it essentially kills it but your body identifies the other proteins of the dead virus and learn to attack it effectively and therefore giving you a better chance of avoiding the flu and shortening it duration if you catch it. Not only do they protect you but the people you interact with by not spreading the virus.  However with nearly every store pushing their flu vaccine, talk to your doctor first and discuss his or her opinion on the subject.
