34% of American households experienced a major unexpected expense over the past year. However, only 39% said they would be able to cover a $1,000 setback using their savings. But there is a fairly simple way to put $1,000 into your savings account without disrupting your tight budget.  Rebecca B. Bird has come up with this ingenious way to build an emergency fund using a wave-type plan over 52 weeks.  You start by putting away one dollar on the first week.  It increases to two dollars for week two, three dollars on week 3 and through ten dollars on week 10.  $15 for week 11, $20 for week 12 and $25 for seven weeks peaking to $35 a week for ten weeks. But as of week 32, you decrease your savings by $5 for a couple of weeks, then decrease by an additional $5 for the next seven weeks and eventually back down to $1 on week 52.  Then you'll have $1,000.  If started at the first of the year, the savings strategy works by allowing for more funds to be saved at times when less demanding expenses of the year, such as late spring and early summer.  Rebecca says her strategy also works in getting you to take up the habit of putting aside money weekly for a rainy day.
