After 11 weeks of re-building the Burger King on Newberry Road re-opens to the public today. Although Burger King fans order the most notable burger on the menu, The Whopper actually has its roots 60 years ago in Gainesville.  According to his autobiography, Burger King Franchisees, Jim Lamore and his partner David R. Edgerton, had made a trip to Gainesville for the grand opening of the first Burger King in town.  While exploring the city, they noticed a small local hamburger stand with a line wrapped around the building and serving something unheard of at the time, a 1/4 hamburger that was fully garnished which was a  novelty at the time.  As the story goes as Jim and David were driving through Micanopy on their way back to Miami, they came up with the name, Whopper.  To mark the Whopper inspiration, an oversized Whopper sandwich has been installed at the re-built Burger King on Newberry Road and opens today (5/16/17) to the public.
