Pumpkin Flavored Days May Be Numbered As A New Flavor Looks To Be King

September 6, 2017

Pumpkin season is here, but for how long.  Over the last few years, Pumpkin Spice Lattes (PSL) have blossomed into an entire array of pumpkin-flavored items but it appears we may have reached peak pumpkin! Data collected has found the number of pumpkin spice items sold online has jumped 49% year-over-year, but sales have only grown by 21%. So the pumpkin spice products keep coming, but sales aren’t keeping up. So what is the potential replacement for PSL?  Maple!  Yes, the taste and smell of Saturday mornings is poised to overtake pumpkin.  It’s up about 85% in nonalcoholic and almost 15% in alcoholic beverages between the same time frame from last year to this year. Dunkin’ Donuts has both an Iced Pumpkin Macchiato and a Maple Pecan Iced Coffee on its menu for fall while rival Starbucks offers a Maple Mocha Frappuccino (it's off menu so ask for it). In other words, Maple may be the new pumpkin by this time next year because as we know, once flavored coffee starts, the rest follows!
