The Proper Way To Heat Up Leftovers For A Happy Stomach

April 10, 2018

Leftovers can be a great way to enjoy a fantastic meal the next day, but how many days after can you enjoy them? Three days is the max regardless of the item, says food health experts. Beyond that it can be an unwanted health risks that can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Food should be cooled down before it goes into the fridge as otherwise it can lower the temperature of your appliance and cause bacteria to grow in all your groceries. Also important is re-heating leftover properly to reduce risks of food poisoning. For instance, a certain type of bacteria that lives on rice can survive the cooking process and continues to grow at room temperature.  It is why you should let rice cool for no longer than one hour and then keep in the fridge no more than one day. Only reheat once. Re-heating once goes for chicken as well.  Make sure to warm it back to 160 degrees before eating. Red meat is a little more durable and can be eaten cold from the fridge.  However skip the microwave and go for a 60 second fan fry on each side to warm up. Mashed potatoes are good to re-heat in the microwave but roasted potatoes should be warmed up on a dry frying pan.  Finally, never store foods in the can.  The danger is metal from the can will leach into the food and leave a metallic taste, so put in a separate container, cover and chill for up to three days.
