The gluten free debate has been taken to a higher power and it will affect the 1.2 billion Catholics world-wide during Holy Communion. While those with Celiac Disease cannot process gluten, many people have chosen to eliminate it from their diets.  Now the Vatican has chimed in on the debate and issued a decree that communion wafers must contain gluten.  New guidelines issued from the Pope state "Hosts [wafers] that are completely gluten-free are invalid matter for the celebration of the Eucharist" and "must be unleavened, purely of wheat, and recently made so that there is no danger of decomposition." However low gluten recipes can be used and GMO flour is acceptable.
