The commercials for it are pretty convincing, rinsing with mouthwash gives you that extra layer of protection as well as fresh breath.  But do you really need to keep a bottle at your desk and gargle after eating that garlic and onion salad?  According to one dentist, it depends.  A lot of times mouthwash is used as a shortcut, with a quick swish instead of brushing your teeth and gums. Dentist say that doesn't work in preventing gingivitis, which leads to gum disease as well as cavities and tooth loss.  Diligent brushing and flossing is much more effective than a quick swish of mouthwash. While mouthwash can refresh your breath before a last-minute meeting, so can a small dab of toothpaste on your tongue and swishing with water.  Keeping toothpaste and a toothbrush at your desk is much better option than a bottle of mouthwash.
