We often turn to music in order to relief stress and for the most part, it can.  But during those extra stressful times, is there one song better at reducing stress than others?  According to a team at Mindlab International, the most relaxing song in the world is the song "weightless" by the English band, Marconi Union. According to analysis, it has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress by as much as 65% in those studied, brought their resting pulse rates to 35% of their usual resting rates and reduced the release of the stress hormone, Cortisol.  But it is no coincidence that this the 8 minute song of guitar, piano and electronic samples of natural soundscapes beats out stress-reducing music from Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.  The song gradually slows in tempo from 60 to 50 beats per minute, taking into account the time needed for your heart rate to follow. The melody never repeats, which relaxes your brain because it doesn’t need to worry about finding a pattern and its low tones punctuated throughout supposedly induces a trance-like state. So next time you need a mini-spa day, put on Weightless by Marconi Union in its original 8 minute version or the 10 hour extended mix online.
