The Most Popular Pure Breed Dog In American Rankings

March 30, 2018

We love our Labs!  The American Kennel Club has released its ranking of pure breed dogs and for the 27th year, Labrador retrievers are the most popular dogs.  German Shepherds rank in at number 2 with golden retrievers the third most popular.  However a new contender has been steadily growing in popularity.  The French Bulldog is capturing our heart and ranks in fourth on the list where it was 76th twenty years ago. Bulldogs, Beagles, Poodles, Rottweilers, Yorkies and German Shorthair Pointers round out the top 10. The Siberian husky and Australian shepherd have jumped into the top 20 in the last decade, while the Chihuahua, pug and Maltese have tumbled out of the top rankings. The rankings reflect puppies and other dogs newly AKC registered in 2017. While Labradoodles and puggles and mixed dogs (mutts) remain very popular with pet owners, the American Kennel Club doesn't track them. Overall, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) estimates there are about 70 million pet dogs nationwide (and over 74 million pet cats.)
