A Lot Of People Pee In The Pool

March 2, 2017

It's a simple rule, don't pee in the pool.  Yet most pools are swimming in it, according to a new study that says there is so much urine that it can be measured in gallons. A research team testing 31 pools and hot tubs found evidence of urine in every single one of them, with an average 8 gallons of urine in a 110,000-gallon pool and 18.5 gallons of urine in a 220,000-gallon pool. Scientist were able to account for urine counter by isolating the levels of acesulfame potassium, or Ace-K, in water. Ace-K is an artificial sweetener found in many foods, does not occur in nature and nearly 100% of it passes through the body unchanged.  Oh, and hot tubs? One hotel hot tub was found to have three times the urine level of the worst swimming pool. Pee itself isn't toxic but when it mixes with chlorine it can create disinfectant byproducts," which can be harmful.  Even though only 1 in 5 American admit to peeing in the pool, the data suggest that number is a little low.
