Mothers-to-be should be careful of eating too much licorice while pregnant.  The candy that millions love, which is also a supplement for digestion health and more recently used in weight loss supplements, can cause developmental problems in children. Researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland will publish their findings say glycyrrhizin, which occurs naturally in licorice can cause higher blood pressure and shorter pregnancies if taken in large qualities.  Additionally, children who were exposed to high amounts of licorice in utero performed poorly in cognitive reasoning tests and had more ADHD-type symptoms. The study found the health problems in mothers who consumed 1/2 gram or more of licorice a week while pregnant.
