Your dry lips, perhaps sunburnt from a recent day outdoors beg for relief!  But as many people know, once you apply lip balm you begin a vicious cycle of re-applying it over and over again.  It's important to know that not all lip balms are the same, says one dermatologist.  Some lip balms contain ingredients that might irritate your lips or actually dehydrate them, which may be why they stay constantly chapped. The other problem is many lip balms contain petroleum jelly, which keeps moisture in your skin.  Using too much for a long period of time can cause your body to produce less natural moisture as a result.  So if you lip balm, avoid ones that contain salicylic acid, menthol, or a fragrance, which can cause irritation.  Instead grab one with lanolin, which also help retain moisture but allows the skin to breathe. Also, chapped lips can result from not getting enough water, to drink up and remember that your lips can get too much sun too.  Look for a lip balm with SPF protection this summer and apply according to the directions.
