Household Items You May Be Cleaning Too Much

June 14, 2018

Believe it or not, it's actually possible to clean your home too much. Whether it means you're cleaning an item too often or cleaning it more than necessary, over-cleaning is a waste time, money and energy and sometimes, even ruin your stuff. For instance, over cleaning your wood furniture can actually make it dirtier. IF you are using a specially formulated wax-based cleaner for wood more than twice a month for cleaning, the oily build up actually attracts dirt and dust.  So use a dry cloth to wipe down furniture weekly and once a month each for the wax cleaner. Pre-rinsing or pre-soaking your dishes?  Forshame! While it might seem like a quick rinse or soak in the sink before cleaning is expediting your dishwashing process, in reality it doesn't take much soap to disinfect your dishes.  So skip "the soak" and just clean them in one fell swoop, and if you're lucky, in a dishwasher. We covered this before but if you're washing your denim jeans after every wear, you're damaging your jeans and shortening their live.  Denim is actually designed to withstand long periods of time without washing. When you spill something on your carpet, it's easy to want to over-saturate the stain with cleaning solution. However, using too much cleaner too often can quickly weaken and damage your carpet. So instead of dousing your carpet with cleanser the next time you spot a stain, opt for a more natural solution—such as diluted apple cider vinegar—before you destroy it by over-cleaning.
