Gainesville "Hot Cops" Selfie Sparks Challenges

September 15, 2017

As we were preparing for Hurricane Irma, Officers John Norman, Michael Hamill and Dan Rengering took a quick selfie before their shift Sunday evening and posted it to the Gainesville Police Department’s Facebook page to assure the public they were on the job. Unknowingly their picture ended up being an internet sensation with many compliments for Gainesville's "Hot Cops."

The post has promoted other police agencies across the country to issue challenges for the crown of "Hot Cops." Sarasota's police department posting their own sefie saying "Gainesville Police Department has nothing on us."

The Pembroke Pines, Florida Police Department made it personal by recreating the Gainesville's Hot Cops selfie.

And ahead of The Florida Gators Saturday's game against Tennessee, the Knoxville Police Department posted their seflie and issued a challenge for those who left a comment to make a small donation in the name of either the Gainesville PD or Knoxville PD to your favorite charity to help Hurricane Irma victims in Florida.

To that, the Gainesville Police Department did set up a donation page through the Community Foundation of North Central Florida to collect donations that will help assist Gainesville-area victims of Hurricane Irma. As for  the hundreds of marriage proposals and dating offers, it appears Mrs. Norman and Mrs. Hamill have enjoyed knowing how millions of women are going crazy over their husbands and remind people not to call 911 to request this group of officers.

Since the post went viral, a complaint was made against Officer Hamill accusing him of making anti-sematic comments online before joining the Gainesville Police Department in 2016.  GPD says they are investigating the complaint. In another Facebook Post, the agency commented that "The Gainesville Police Department prides itself with our philosophy and mission of compassion, inclusion, and respect and will fully review the matter."
