Family Dog Saves Infant From Burning House

August 18, 2016

A family dog made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting an infant baby late Sunday in Baltimore, Maryland. Erika Poremski had stepped downstairs to get something from her car.  When she turned around to head back into her two story home, she noticed smoke pluming out of the roof and windows.  She drops everything and attempts to return inside to rescue her infant baby, Viviana, from certain death.  However the fire had spread quickly, filling the upstairs with toxic smoke and flames.  Her hands and face burned from attempting to rescue her child.  The Baltimore Fire Department arrived and began to battle the blaze while firefighters went into rescue the baby.  To their shock and horror they are able to spot Viviana, who had been protected from the smoke and flames by the family dog, Polo, who had sprawled his body over Viviana. Paramedics were able to revive Viviana, who has severe burns on her face, arm and side. But Polo did not survive the fire. Erika said her baby only had burns on one side of her body because Polo protected the rest; even though he could have escaped. No other injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.  Poremski said her daughter's condition is still serious and will be monitored day to day.
