Is Coconut A Superfood?

You see it all over health food and grocery stores, coconut water, coconut oil and just about anything tied to good health.  The coconut is riding high among superfood rankings.  But is coconut a superfood?  it would certainly seem this gluten-free. Lactose-free. Dairy-free food qualifies.  According to one research group, sales of coconut water went from $17.9 million to $42.6million worldwide over the last 3 years. However it isn't a silver bullet for weight loss and healthy living.  Turns out that coconut oil is packed with saturated fats.  84% of its calories come from them compared to 63% from butter and 14% from olive oil and although it isn't the same bad fats found in red meat, it is something that can still increase cholesterol levels significantly. As for coconut water, while it might contain electrolytes which help you re-hydrate after workouts, a 12oz carton typically contains more than four teaspoons of sugar, which half of the recommended daily allowance. Moderation is the key as too much of one thing isn't always the best for you.
