The Best Way To Treat A Sunburn

Perhaps you got a little too much sun over the weekend and now it hurts to even wear a shirt or pants!  As hard as we try to prevent a sunburn, they occasionally happen.  In 2013, there were approximately 33,826 visits to emergency room because of a sunburn and while there’s nothing that can undo a sunburn, you can try these treatments to help the pain and assist the skin to heal better. Take a cool shower or bath.  Lukewarm water will help take some of the heat out of your burned skin but avoid cold water as it may make the pain worse.  Adding colloidal oatmeal to your bath will coat and soothe the skin, improve hydration, and calm inflammation. Then liberally apply a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid, which helps water bind with the skin. While Aloe Vera moisturizer and an aloe plant are soothing as well.  Avoid using petroleum jelly products, because they won’t cool you down. Spreading a thin layer of cold plain yogurt over your skin will soothe it and take away some heat, and it will act as a mild anti-inflammatory. You can also make a cold compress of skim milk, egg whites and ice.  Soak a washcloth in the mixture and apply it to skin. The proteins in the milk and egg coat the surface of the skin to calm the burn. And if your skin does blister, resist the urge to pop or peel them. Doing so can allow bacteria to enter through the exposed skin and causing a whole other set of problems. If any blisters do pop, be sure to apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to the affected skin. If you feel unwell, have chills, a fever, or nausea, seek out medical attention immediately as the burn may be sever and need professional treatment.
