An Athletes' Tweet From 2011 Predicts Her Olympic Goal

August 5, 2016

They officially begin tonight! The games of the 31st Olympiad from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, which athletes train a lifetime to make it.  That includes Morolake Akinosun, who will be competing in the women's 100 meter relay on August 18th.  For her, the dream of the Olympics began in 2011.  It was the summer before her senior year of high school in Illinois, where she had been entertaining track and field offers from various schools.  As she was watching the World Championships for Track and Field on TV, she tweeted this prediction on July 28, 2011: In 2016, I will be 22, graduated from a school I have not chosen yet, and going to the Olympics (smiley face).  That is where her dream began.  Today she is in her senior year at the University of Texas after transferring from the University of Illinois.  She realized her prediction would come true when she earned a spot on the US Olympic team a few weeks ago, saying she was in disbelief and began crying as the reality of what was going to happen sank in.  Akinosun said she tweeted a lot of different things when she was 17 and had forgotten about the tweet — until it showed up recently on her Timehop app. Since then it has been shared thousands of times.  The opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 tonight on NBC.
