The iPad mini appears to be going the way of the iPod.  Apple has signaled it will eventually discontinue the 7.9 inch iPad as it will no longer release updated operating software nor will manufacture any more.  Apple sources say many users opt for the larger handsets, like their Plus model iPhone instead of a small iPad. Ironically, the iPad Mini appears to be discontinued to allow an even bigger iPad, dubbed the iPad Pro, with a 10.5 inch display, which is almost an inch bigger than the current iPad models (9.7 inches). The iPad Pro is expected to be released around the same time as of iPhone 8 later this year, rumored to complement each other in their appearance.
