Progress is being made in the war again cancer as the American Cancer Society reported overall cancer deaths were down nearly 2% from 2017 to 2018, continuing a trend of more survivors beating their cancer. Breast cancer death rates declined a whopping 39% from 1989 to 2015 thanks to improvements in early detection. In fact doctors and scientists have identified two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer), associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Its knowledge that 27-year old Samantha Webber is all too familiar about. In 2012 she found out that she is a carrier of the BRCA1 gene. A year later she lost her mother to advanced stage ovarian cancer.  Although she remembers her mother fighting back, she saw the painful decline of her mother and came to the tough conclusion that she wanted to reduce her risk of developing cancer. Her decision to schedule a preventative double mastectomy in 2018. It’s a horrible to make a choice between bad and worse, but hosting a "boob Voyage" party before the surgery is one way to celebrate a silver lining.  The party of Samantha's closet friends and family was a festive event in which each guests bringing food which was boob-related, including nipple cupcakes and a large cake shaped as breasts. Samantha says that she wanted to make the whole experience that I was about to go through more light-hearted and to have some fun, rather than getting sad. Samantha and her guests celebrated her choice to have a mastectomy to embrace the strength it takes and to encourage each other to be strong in the future. She hopes her "Boob Voyage" party idea inspires other women to check their breasts and get genetic testing for the BRCA gene.
