Recycle Your Old Mattress

When you think of items to recycle usually plastic bottles, aluminum cans and paper bag come to mind.  An old mattress doesn't usually pop up on the recycle list but there is a lot of items that can be make from recycling it.  From box springs to foam, mattresses contain valuable recyclable material which can be repurposed in a number of ways, including as carpeting and clothing. In fact over 90% of your old mattress is recyclable but moving such a bulky item can be cumbersome. Alachua County curbside recycling will pick up bulky furniture items such as mattresses, for free, on your recycling day.  You'll need to remove it from your home and place it next to your recycling bins separate from any other trash or debris and it will be picked up on your recycling day. Marion County has weekly bulk item collections sites that you can being mattresses for recycling. The location rotates on Saturdays between the seven collection centers. There are also services that will come by and remove them for a fee, which may be a feature of convenience since they'll physically remove it from inside your home and haul it off for recycling. Be careful of delivery companies that offer to remove your mattress as some simply haul it to the landfill trash.  Ask where they will dispose of it.
