How You Know When To Shake Or Stir A Cocktail

 Now that we are at the end of another work week, perhaps you'll celebrate the occasion with an adult beverage after work. But as anyone who is a fan of James Bond will tell you, Martinis are meant to be shaken, not stirred. So what is the big deal between stirring a cocktail and shaking it? A lot and it's all down to what ingredients are in the drink. For example, a cocktail with different types of alcohol, the densities are all going to be, if not the exact same, extremely close. That means you might just need a stir to get the alcohols to mingle nicely. However, once you start adding juices and thick, viscous syrups, you’re going to need to create a little more turbulence to make sure you have a homogenous beverage without a pool of cold syrup at the bottom. Also, there is a matter of mouthfeel. Both shaking and stirring chill and dilute a beverage, but the violence of shaking also works to introduce air (tiny bubbles) into your drink, which can be quite pleasant if appropriate.
