A classic definition of irony as a car that is hailed as being one of the safest on the roads happens to be the most accident-prone too. In 2016 there were nearly 18,000 automobile accidents each day and with a growing list of electronic distractions, it isn't much of a surprise that there are roughly 1,700 car accidents every second in the United State. What is surprising is that the Subaru Crosstrek is the vehicle involved in the most accidents.    Insurance website, Insurify, took a look at crash data of over 1.6 million vehicles and found that over 25% of registered Subaru Crosstreks had been involved in at least one fender bender, which seems high for a car marketed hard for its level of safety. Number two on the list is the Honda HR-V, Hyundai Elantra GT, Infinity Q50 and the Subaru WRX round out the top 5. The Mazda 3, Acura ILX, Lexus CT, Chevrolet Trax and Hyundai Santa Fe Sort round out the top 10.  While nine of the 10 cars that suffer the most accidents at the highest rate come from foreign makers, they also receive many of the highest safety ratings. Interestingly, the 2019 edition of the Crosstrek also received the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, which led some to speculate the higher rate of accidents in the safest vehicles is due to owners driving their cars less safely and taking more risks.
