Avocados are popular. In fact it's estimated we each consume 7 pounds of avocado per person each year, compared to just one pound back in 1989. But any avocado aficionado will tell you that you are buying an avocado and not the seed which leads us to a simple way to figure out which avocado offers the most green goodness versus a big pit. The simple guide is the rounder the avocado, the bigger the pit. In three different comparisons of avocados with identical weights but different shapes, the longer, pear-shaped avocados generally had smaller seeds than the more-rounded ones. For instance, testers opened up two six-ounce Hass avocados, and the seed from the longer one weighed 1 ounce, while the seed from the rounded one weighed 1-1/2 ounces. The difference of 1/2 ounce may seem inconsequential, but when you consider that you’ll need two to four avocados to make guacamole, the difference in yield starts to add up. However this isn't a guarantee that you opt for an oval-shaped avocado that contain a huge pit!
