Picture it. Saturday morning. You eagerly await for two pieces of whole wheat bread to "pop" out of the toaster perfect crisp, light and warm.  You then realize that all the butter in your house is still being chilled inside the refrigerator!  Now you could take a stick and zap it for a few seconds in the microwave to soften it but you know the center will liquefy while the ends remain stiff and you've got a mess!  Or you can reach for your cheese grater. Peel the wrapper back and grate the exposed end over your toast.  This trick creates smaller pieces of butter that will soften enough for you to spread without tearing up your toast or if grated evenly, should melt on its own and you can get on to enjoying buttered toast.  Grating butter with a cheese grater also works when you're baking and also need softened butter.  The best part of this hack is that you ca pre-grate butter and keep it stored in the refrigerator.  Grated butter in a bowl is still much easier to scoop and spread than cutting directly from the stick.
