Why Is Old Navy Selling American Flag T-shirts That Are Purple?

June 28, 2019

This Thursday (7/4/19), we will celebrate our 243rd birthday as a country with patriotic pride by decorating and wearing the colors red, white and blue.  So why is one clothing retailer selling American flag t-shirts in purple? Since it was established in 1994, Old Navy has offered varied Americana with red, white and blue t-shirts each year. However this year their patriotic purple shirts are this specific color for a reason.  In a statement, the American flag's emblematic colors of red, white and blue come together to create the color purple. The coming together has symbolic undertones and, according to Old Navy, "are meant to celebrate and promote belonging. A reminder that we are one nation, indivisible, not defined by the current labels of 'red' and 'blue.'" The limited run of 1,994 (the year of its founding) are being produced and being that they're only $5, they are selling fast! The good news is the section is beyond t-shirts.  Hoodies and long-sleeved t-shirts versions are also available.
