Songs That Sound Romantic That Are Not Really About Love

Valentine's Day is the day you show that you truly love someone and what better way to show that love than by making a mix tape...and my mix tape I mean a playlist.  But seemingly lovey-dovey songs aren't always about love. For instance, Extreme's "More Than Words" certainly sounds like a love song but singer-songwriter Nuno Bettencourt of the group says the repeated live "I Love You" is a Band-Aid in relationship in that it is said so easily and lightly that is can lose meaning.

Lionel Richie knows a thing about love songs but don't think his hit "Hello" is a love song. In watching the video, Lionel plays a teacher who follows a blind pottery student around, watching her from the shadows as she eats lunch, talks with her friends, and does Jazzercize. He even goes so far as to call her on the phone and breathe into the receiver like Brian Peppers. In the end, turns out the girl was just as creepy as her professor, and she made a bust of his cranium in his honor. Creepy! By the way, Lionel hates this video!!!

Seal's "Kiss From A Rose" screams Valentine's Day right? Forget those lyrics, about obsession, about the intersecting sensations of pleasure and pain. "Kiss from a Rose" isn't a song about dark-hued love; it's about Batman! If you don't immediately think of Seal stomping around on a Gotham rooftop, emoting wildly in front of a flashing Bat-Signal, you're totally missing the point.

Paul McCartney wrote the 1966 Beatles hit "Got To Get You Into My Life" but it wasn’t a woman Paul was writing about, he was referring to marijuana. However with lyrics like "Ooh, then I suddenly see you. Ooh, did I tell you I need you. Every single day of my life," who could blame you for the confusion?

But what makes music so beautiful is that is open to interpretation. So if it expresses the emotion you have for someone, even though the writer and/or performer has a different viewpoint, it's one you can use for love!
