Chances are you have a can of cooking spray stored in your kitchen. Little did you know that can may be a ticking time bomb! Over half a dozen people are suing Conagra after sustaining injuries allegedly resulting from exploding cans of Pam cooking spray. The lawsuit claim that Conagra sold dangerous and defective products when it re-designed it's can in 2011.  Apparently the new cans were designed to relieve the internal pressure if the can became damaged or buckled with four u-shaped vents at the bottom of the can.  Although the instructions on thaw can state that the cans shouldn't be left on a stove or near a heat source, sprayed near an open flame or stored above 120°F, the lawsuit states the cans exploded at temperatures well below 120°F and without being damaged or buckling and the propellants such as propane and butane, seeped out and in some cases ignited fires. Conagra says all of their Pam cooking spray products are safe to use as long as you follow the handling instructions, the company discontinued using the new can design with the U-shaped vented bottom earlier this year but has not issued a recall. However the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is currently looking into the victims’ claims. It may be a good idea to check your pantry and replace any cans of Pam with a u-vented bottom. Look at the bottom of the can and if there are four U-shaped etchings that form an X, it is the can in question and you may want to remove it from your home. Also, be sure to read the label to inform yourself how to use cooking spray in a safe way: never leave it on a stove or near a heat source, never spray near an open flame, and don’t store it where temps can get anywhere near 120°F.
