The devices we use every day are increasingly voice-controlled or internet-connected, even if they probably shouldn’t be. While these devices listen, watch and record you all in an effort to perform better, they can also be used to collect data on you.  However there is an app that will alert you when a nearby smart device is snooping on you. Internet of Things Assistant was developed by a team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University which will let you discover the devices around you and learn about the data they collect. The Carnegie Mellon team can tip you off about other kinds of data collection too, such as audio data that’s collected from smart speakers, or “presence data” that could be collected by a beacon in a given storefront. If the device offers a ready way to opt-out of that data collection, this app will help you access those choices—if they choose to offer it. The free app is available for iOS and Android devices.
