There is little doubt that you've tossed out a plastic bowl that once stored chili, Marianna sauce or curry because the bowl became permanently stained.  Believe it or not, there is some simple ways you can get those food stains out of those bowls.  The first method is to fill the bowl with a 50/50 solution of water and white distilled vinegar. Let the container soak for 30 minutes or even overnight, until the stain fades. If the stubborn stain remains, it's time to kick it up a notch with baking soda. Dump out the vinegar/water mixture and sprinkle in some baking soda and let it sit a few minutes. Then use a cloth to work the baking soda into the stain. The gentle abrasion should lift the stain without harming the plastic. A lot of people recommend a bleach mixture to remove the stains but remember that plastic is porous and that bleach may leach its way into your plastic and ultimately into your food.  If after the vinegar, water and baking soda the bowl remains discolored, it may be time to send it to the big cupboard in the sky as it could be a sign that the plastic is starting to degrade.
