When it comes to the space you live in, there are two clear choices: rent or buy. But did you know that you have that same choice about the things you put inside your home? Here, some things it may make more sense to rent than buy. While there are some tools every homeowner should have, like a cordless drill, a wrench, a level, and measuring tape. But let’s be honest: How many times a year do you pressure wash your patio? Rather than splurge on these rarely-used big-ticket items, check out rental options at your local hardware store. Depending on the complexity of the item, rentals generally start around $20 for a half-day. Similarly, every home needs some cleaning tools—a quality sponge; microfiber cloths; a decent vacuum. But tools like steam cleaners or tile and grout cleaners just take up space between yearly or biannual uses. Save your money and rent these items when you really need them. Babies need a lot of stuff. Invest in items that will grow with your child, like a dresser or a convertible crib, but save your cash when it comes to short-lived needs. For example, if your baby has trouble sleeping, you can rent an electric bassinet, which sells for over $1,000 when purchased outright or just about $3 per day when rented. And instead of taking all your baby gear on vacation, consider renting the bigger items such as a crib, car seat, or swing. Believe it or not, you can rent luggage!  Instead of big, bulky bags being stored in a closet and use once or twice a year, like Rent Luggage let you choose anything from suitcases to duffels to rooftop carriers for your car. Finally you can rent solar panels! Purchasing your own is a costly endeavor, but there are plenty of places to rent solar panels. The cost of installation varies—some companies install the panels for free, and some charge a small fee. The monthly cost also varies. You may pay a monthly fee, or the company might ask you to sign the power over to them and sell it back to you at a rate that’s lower than what you’d pay the electric company.
