As we head back to work this week, most likely after a dreaded weekend house-cleaning binge, those mundane tasks may have done your body some good! It is becoming apparent that high levels of the stress hormone cortisol can wreak havoc on your body. Research ash shown that simple tasks, such as washing dishes and cleaning the house, can actually reduce those stress levels due to the mundane nature that allows you to mentally "check out" and reset you mind. A reduction in cortisol has also been found to be more beneficial when you exercise in a group by 26% compared to working out alone. While laundry is one of the least-liked chores, sniffing your partner's laundry can reduce stress too. While smelling the scent of a stranger can cause cortisol to spike, sensing your partner’s smell reduces your stress. One way to get through chores is to sing along with your favorite songs, which can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels.
