Web Extensions That Will Help Ease The Political Ads Until Election Day

October 22, 2018

Election Day is just a few weeks away and that means targeted political ads are ramping up, with some of them downright nasty.  There's a good chance you’re seeing targeted ads on Facebook based on your activity both on the platform and around the web. For those of us who are looking for ways to limit Facebook’s ability to influence what we say and do online, Mozilla recently launched a couple of extensions for Firefox designed to curb Facebook’s ability to affect your political decision-making. Download Firefox Facebook Container, which is an internally developed tool that limits Facebook’s ability to track your activity outside of Facebook. This should prevent Facebook from following you around the web may stop it from magically knowing everything about you (which is beneficial past November 6th). The second extension is a fact-checking platform that targets political ads for accuracy.  The ProPublica’s Facebook Political Ad Collector, which works on Firefox as well as Google Chrome, monitors political ads and submits them (not your personal information) to unbiased journalists to fact-check them and prevent misinformation and fake news from spreading unchecked. Regardless of the ads you see and hear, researching on your own each candidate, the issues and individual amendments will ensure you are making an informed vote on November 6th.
