It's common to feel exhausted after sitting behind a desk all day. But how can that be? The "I'm beat" feeling eclipses that of a 60 minute cardio workout. Work fatigue, research has shown, really isn't about physical activity at all but scientists still don't know exactly why it is that our minds can make us so tired. However there are some theories on mental fatigue and what to do when you start to wear down. Generally our minds are coordinating physical activity, such as swinging an axe, and it does the same when you are typing on a computer. However the physical activity is not as intense as an axe swing and over time it creates a different type of fatigue. While physical tiredness can help us fall asleep at night, mental fatigue can actually do the opposite, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. This is because you are 'not using your mind and body the way they evolved to be used. It is why physical activity, as simple as a long walk, is so important for your mental health.
