Relief payments are slated to begin this week, but there’s still some confusion about who’s getting what, and which pieces of information the government needs in order to process your payment. While most don’t have to do anything as long as they’ve filed a tax return for either 2018 or 2019, there’s been some confusion about people who don’t need to file tax returns. While the IRS has made it clear that people receiving Social Security or railroad retirement benefits don’t have to take action in order to receive their payment, the IRS has not provided clear guidance to other groups, including those receiving veteran’s benefits. Intuit Turbo Tax has created a Stimulus Registration tool that walks you through the process of filing a minimum tax return with the IRS, then asks for your direct deposit information so you can get your payment more quickly. TurboTax will share that information with the IRS to process your payment. You’ll need to set up a free account with an email address, user ID and password to use the tool. Keep in mind that most people do not need to do anything to get their relief payment. This particular tool is designed only for people who aren’t required to file taxes and don’t receive Social Security benefits, to ensure they don’t slip between the cracks when payments begin to be issued.
