The dictionary defines an earworm as a catchy song or tune that runs continually through a person's mind. You might simplify it as maddening, especially if it's an earworm that just won't go away! According to researchers, earworms are incredibly common with more than 90% of people plagued with them weekly basis. So common, scientists have been struggling for years in ways to prevent an earworm from occurring. But an uncommon method may be the key to busting your earworm out of your mind.  Chewing gum.  Apparently chewing gum might be the easiest and most effective means of making an earworm vanish. The theory is that gum interferes with "articulatory motor programming," which are the motor skills that are involved in speech. Thus, by chewing gum we can prevent our brain from singing along to those catchy tunes. To confirm this, researchers conducted three experiments involving chewing gum and listening to catchy tunes and found in each case that gum chewers had an easier time dislodging earworms than those who were not chewing. So next time you desperately want to rid your mind of a song, reach for a stick of gum.  What have you got to lose?
