When you vision a cotton swab, one of its uses you think of is to clean out your ears.  Although health professionals have caution against this practice for years as you risk causing an infection from scratching the ear canal or damaging your ear drum. Believe it or not it was much worse for a 31-year old British man, who suffered a horrible brain infection when a piece of cotton from the swab came lodged in his ear canal before making its way up his skull. The lodged cotton was discovered after the man suffered seizures and was taken to the hospital. Fortunately, after minor surgery to remove the cotton, a week in the hospital and two months of antibiotics, he is doing well without permanent damage.  While this is an extreme case of what can go wrong sticking cotton swabs in your ear canal, it's best to use a few drops of olive or almond oil to clean out wax.  Although ear wax generally falls out on its own, placing 2 to 3 drops of olive or almond oil in your ear twice a day for a few days, lodged ear wax should fall out of your ear, especially at night when you’re lying down.
